President Joe Biden had signed the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law in November 2021, allocating $7.5 billion for electric vehicle charging. Of this, $5 billion is dedicated to building a network of charging stations along major highways, called the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure program.
According to The Federal Highway Administration, over the past three years only seven or eight charging stations have been produced. This is well below the 50,000 per year to meet the 2030 goal.
When questioned about this over the weekend, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg reiterated that the president’s goal is to have half a million chargers up by the end of this decade.
Should the Federal Government get out of the business of building charging stations and try to salvage whatever portion of the taxpayers investment is possible?
