Australian Censorship

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese wants X (formerly Twitter) to block a controversial video across the entire globe. The video shows a 16 year old attacking a bishop at a church in Sydney.

Twitter has complied and taken down the video for users in Australia. Albanese wants a full global ban rather than hiding the clips from Australian viewers only.

From a statement from X regarding the situation, “While X respects the right of a country to enforce its laws within its jurisdiction, the eSafety Commissioner does not have the authority to dictate what content X’s users can see globally. We will robustly challenge this unlawful and dangerous approach in court,” the statement said. “Global takedown orders go against the very principles of a free and open internet and threaten free speech everywhere.”

Albanese sees Musk’s actions as a disregard for Australian laws, arguing that the distressing content should be blocked in the interest of public safety.

Do you agree with Elon Musk that X should not allow one country to censor content for the entire world?
